Description:
Experiment in Light, Space, & Material: No. 1-6 & 7-8 is a dynamic sculptural installation of six light encapsulating columns. This immersive work is an experiment in our perception, understanding, and relationship to light, space, and material. My work aims to understand light as a material and a medium through its response to physical material and space. In doing so, we experience the light as a part of our sensory perception. We may note that light has no inherent form or scale, yet both are connected and altered through the use of materials and space.
In this work, I use the physical materials of concrete and rebar deliberately in order to create a observable physical encapsulating barrier to shape and retain the light. In doing so the structure shapes the light, while the light illuminates the structure. The seemingly opposing materials of physical and ephemeral can work together in order to create a perceived space. This space is not only between the cap and base, but from one column to the other, or even the column to the already existing architecture of the space. In doing so light has the ability to illuminate and show, but also has the potential to conceal. The light emits an aura that invites the viewer to investigate and gaze. Yet in the same sense, that aura can also be abrasive and deter the viewer. In doing so this work tries understand light as a material and medium through its response to physical material and space.
Artist Statement:
I am an artist concentrated on bridging the gap between the arts and sciences. I am interested in researching environments and architectural spaces through experimental scientific exploration and perception of the senses. In doing so, I produce interactive new media works rooted in digital fabrication and design that addresses the questions and queries of our world and how we interact with it.
